June was another incredibly busy month for us here at Storyy Group. Lots of exciting things have been taking place, so we wanted to give you a quick snapshot of highlights and give you an insight into what we get up to with young people on a day-to-day basis.
Birch Hill (Secondary AP):
· During a recent PSHE session, our young people were asked to name as many social media platforms as possible.
· They created a tally chart and took it out to the public.
· They approached members of the public, asking what social media platform they use the most, and logged it on their chart.
· Mentors reported that our young people enjoyed this activity and spoke politely and respectfully to everyone they encountered.
Flip It Projects:
Our secondary sites are launching a new project called ‘Flip It’, where students work in groups to become entrepreneurs. With a budget, they plan routes to local charity shops to find items to upsell and develop, learning about budgeting, breaking even, and making a profit:
· Some of our young people went out to purchase items for their Flip It projects.
· They visited charity shops in Sandhurst to explore what was available.
· One young man purchased a suitcase, believing it would be a good item to sell because “it is coming up to the summer holidays and people will be looking to purchase good quality, used suitcases.”
End-of-Term Rewards:
· With the end of term fast approaching, our young people are thinking about how to spend the reward points that they have been accumulating throughout their sessions.
· A large group is hoping to gather enough points to go to Thorpe Park next week.
· They are aware of how many points they need by the end of next Monday and are working together to earn them.
· They have been discussing ways to acquire additional points.
· Fingers crossed they can reach their goal and finish the term with a great day out.
Children’s Homes & Supported Accommodation (16+)
Our Children’s Home and Supported Accommodation (16+) currently provides homes for 13 young people across 5 houses.
Education, Training & Employment:
· We support one unaccompanied asylum-seeking child who is in education and engaging well with their course and joins in all social activities within the home.
· Eight of our young people are in education.
· One young person has finished their GCSEs, and two young people have completed their A-Level exams.
· One of our students is volunteering part-time in a cafe.
· We have one resident who is in full-time employment as a hairdresser.
Work Experience:
· One young person completed two days of work experience for Designed by Carley, setting up VIP tables at Ascot races. They received great feedback about how hard they worked and also completed 20,000 steps each day.
· Two other young people have just finished work experience for Designed by Carley at the Silverstone Grand Prix. They set up flowers within VIP areas and again people received amazing feedback about their hard work and positive attitudes.
· One young person also completed one week’s work experience, helping young people at Oakwood Climbing Centre. They helped teach school children, put on activities, and got fully stuck in.
Activities at the Homes:
· One of the young people completed their A-levels and as promised, Senior Support Worker Richard took them out on a lovely dog walk with Dexter the Labrador.
· One young person had an end-of-year art show, where her work was displayed. She invited her support worker to attend the event, at which they received excellent feedback from teachers on the quality of work produced.
· A young person has been making jewellery and made her first two sales in June.
· A few support workers took a bunch of young people to a local funfair; everyone had a great time!
· Support worker Jade organised a wonderful Pride BBQ party which was enjoyed by lots of staff and young people from across all our homes.
· Support worker Kass has been working with young people across our homes, making planters out of old pallets, young people did a lot of painting and decorating to make the gardens look great!
· Everyone loves food and cooking within the Homes; cooking activities are hosted all the time. They’ve recently enjoyed Jollof rice, Vietnamese spring rolls, Caribbean cuisine, lots of baking, cakes, bread and cookies.
