Alternative Provision Primary SEMH and Reading Specialist

Main Role:

  • Design, implement, and support a whole-school reading approach in a new specialist setting.
  • Fulfill professional responsibilities as per the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document.
  • Meet the expectations in the Teachers’ Standards.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and teach well-structured lessons.
  • Assess, monitor, record, and report on pupils’ learning needs, progress, and achievements.
  • Adapt teaching to respond to pupils’ strengths and needs.
  • Set high expectations to inspire and challenge pupils.
  • Promote good progress and outcomes.
  • Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge.
  • Prepare pupils for external tests as needed.
  • Address social, emotional, and mental health barriers to learning.

 

Whole-School Organisation, Strategy, and Development:

  • Implement phonics reading schemes for primary phase readers.
  • Develop a whole-school reading scheme supporting learners with dyslexia, ADHD, and Autism.
  • Contribute to the school’s policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Support the wider life and ethos of the school.
  • Work on curriculum and pupil development.
  • Provide cover for absent teachers.

 

Health, Safety, and Discipline:

  • Promote pupil safety and wellbeing.
  • Maintain good order and discipline, ensuring a safe learning environment.

 

Professional Development:

  • Participate in appraisal procedures and further training.
  • Support the professional development of others.

 

Communication:

  • Communicate effectively with pupils, parents, and carers.

 

Collaboration:

  • Work with colleagues and other professionals.
  • Develop effective professional relationships.

 

Conduct:

  • Uphold public trust and maintain high ethical standards.
  • Respect the school’s ethos, policies, and practices.
  • Follow statutory professional duties and responsibilities.

 

Management of Staff and Resources:

  • Collaborate with teachers and support staff for optimal outcomes.
  • Assist in recruiting and developing staff.
  • Manage delegated resources.

 

Safeguarding:

  • Safeguard and promote the welfare of children, following school policies and the staff code of conduct.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Qualified teacher status and a degree.
  • Successful teaching experience in SEMH settings or similar.
  • Experience with Phonics schemes.
  • Experience with reading approaches supporting dyslexia and other learning barriers.


S
kills and Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the National Curriculum and effective teaching strategies.
  • Understanding of child learning processes.
  • Ability to adapt teaching to pupil needs.
  • Ability to build effective relationships with pupils.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and behaviour management.
  • Good ICT skills, particularly for supporting learning.
