Keeping Young People Engaged Over Summer

The Challenge Beyond Term Time

For many young people, the summer holidays are exciting, but for others, the loss of routine, structure and social connection can quickly lead to isolation, disengagement and increased anxiety. Without consistent opportunities to stay active and engaged, six weeks can feel incredibly long, particularly for young people who already struggle with confidence, emotional regulation or social interaction.

At Storyy Group, we recognise that support should not stop when term time ends. Maintaining engagement throughout the summer is an important part of helping young people sustain progress, build relationships and continue developing confidence outside of the classroom environment.

Creating Positive Experiences

One of the biggest benefits of structured summer programmes is the opportunity for young people to experience things they may not normally have access to. Through our activities, young people are encouraged to try new experiences, build friendships and develop practical skills in environments that feel safe, supportive and enjoyable.

Whether that is through sports, climbing activities, creative sessions, cooking or team challenges, these experiences help young people step outside of their comfort zones in a positive and manageable way.

For many young people, confidence develops through doing. Taking part in a new activity, contributing within a group or achieving something they did not think they could do often creates a sense of achievement that carries into other areas of their lives.

The Importance of Routine During Summer

While summer should feel enjoyable and relaxed, maintaining some level of routine remains important. For young people who benefit from structure during the school year, a complete loss of routine can make returning to education in September far more difficult.

At Storyy, our programmes continue to provide consistency, expectations and positive engagement throughout the summer period, helping young people maintain momentum while still enjoying the break from school.

This balance allows young people to remain socially connected and emotionally supported during a time when many services are reduced.

Building Social Confidence

Summer activities also create valuable opportunities for young people to strengthen communication skills and develop positive relationships with peers and staff.

Many young people accessing our services have previously struggled in larger group settings or found it difficult to engage socially. Smaller group environments and supportive activities help reduce pressure, allowing relationships to develop more naturally and confidently.

These moments may seem small, but they often have a significant impact on self-esteem and emotional wellbeing.

Supporting Young People Beyond Education

At Storyy Group, our focus has always been wider than education alone. We believe young people should have opportunities to enjoy experiences, discover interests and feel part of something positive, regardless of the challenges they may have faced previously.

By keeping young people engaged over summer, we help maintain the confidence, structure and connection that support long-term progress moving into the next academic year.
