PE Teacher

We are seeking a dynamic and versatile Physical Education (PE) Teacher to join our new SEMH school. This role offers a unique blend of responsibilities, including delivering on-site and off-site sports and physical activities, leading personal development activities and supporting academic learning through 1:1 interventions.

Key Responsibilities: 

PE and Sports Delivery:
• Plan and deliver engaging physical education lessons, ensuring all activities are accessible and enjoyable for students with varying abilities and SEMH needs. (plans and resources will be provided)
• Organise and lead a variety of sports and fitness activities, focusing on improving students’ physical health, confidence, teamwork, and social skills.
• Foster a positive and supportive environment where students feel confident to participate, learn new skills, and build resilience through physical challenges.

Personal Development Activities:
• Lead and support extracurricular activities focused on personal development, such as forest school, gardening, creative activities, climbing and swimming.
• Design activities that promote emotional well-being, team building, and personal growth, ensuring students develop confidence, problem-solving skills, and a love for the outdoors.
• Provide students with opportunities to engage in hands-on, experiential learning that builds their self-esteem and independence.

Academic Support and Intervention:
• Support classroom teachers as a learning support assistant during academic lessons, helping students stay on task and engaged.
• Deliver 1:1 interventions in maths and reading to help students who may need extra support in these core subjects.
• Use creative and individualised approaches to ensure students achieve measurable academic progress, fostering a love for learning both inside and outside of the classroom.

Student Well-being and Behaviour Management:
• Serve as a positive role model for students, encouraging good sportsmanship, healthy competition, and emotional regulation during physical activities.
• Consistently apply agreed-upon behaviour management strategies to ensure a structured and positive learning environment in both PE and academic settings.
• Provide emotional support to students, helping them manage any frustrations or challenges they encounter during physical or academic tasks.

Collaboration and Communication:
• Work closely with classroom teachers, SEN coordinators, and the nurture team to create a holistic, integrated approach to student support.
• Regularly provide feedback to teachers on student progress, both in physical education and academic interventions.
• Participate in meetings and training sessions to enhance your understanding of SEMH needs and best practices for supporting students in all aspects of their development.

Health and Safety:
• Ensure the safety of all students during physical activities, following appropriate risk assessments and health and safety guidelines.
• Monitor and maintain equipment, ensuring it is safe and appropriate for use during physical activities.

Experience & Skills

• A strong background in sports, physical education, or personal development activities.
• Experience working with children or young people, particularly those with SEMH or additional needs, is desirable.
• Enthusiasm for promoting physical health and well-being in students of all abilities.
• Ability to lead outdoor activities and practical learning experiences
• Excellent communication skills, enabling you to work effectively with students, staff, and parents.
• Patience, resilience, and the ability to adapt activities to meet the diverse needs of students.
• Confidence in delivering 1:1 interventions in maths and reading, with a willingness to support students academically as well as physically.
• A commitment to personal professional development is essential.
