Learning Support Assistant

We are seeking a passionate and empathetic Learning Support Assistant (LSA) to join our new specialist SEMH school for children aged 7-13 years.

The ideal candidate will play a key role in providing personalised support to students with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs, working closely with teachers and other professionals to create an inclusive, nurturing, and stimulating learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Student Support:
• Provide tailored one-on-one and group support to students with SEMH and other special educational needs (SEN) during classroom activities.
• Clarify instructions, motivate students, and provide reassurance to help them stay focused and engaged in learning tasks.
• Foster positive relationships with students, using praise, encouragement, and a consistent, nurturing approach to support their social and emotional development.

Behaviour Management:
• Implement agreed-upon behaviour management strategies to ensure a structured, positive learning environment.
• Contribute to developing and following support plans for individual students.
• Assist in risk assessments and ensure appropriate safeguarding measures are taken.

Delivery:
• Lead on the ‘Motional’ mental health & emotional wellbeing programme within your class.

Collaboration and Communication:
• Work closely with class teachers, SEN coordinator, and other professionals to contribute to the planning and delivery of lessons, using the Assess Plan Do Review model.
• Participate in multi-agency meetings, sharing relevant information about student progress and needs.
• Provide regular feedback to teachers about student behaviour, progress, and engagement.

Resource Development:
• Assist in the preparation and creation of teaching materials and resources tailored to individual student needs.
• Use ICT tools to support student learning and engage them in educational activities.

Monitoring and Assessment:
• Assist in observing and assessing students’ academic and emotional development, modifying learning tasks as necessary to meet their specific needs.
• Help gather evidence to support teacher evaluations of student progress.
Additional Support:
• Provide nurture and additional support for students during non-academic times such as break or lunch periods.
• Ensure the well-being and safety of students at all times by adhering to safeguarding policies.

Personal development programme:
• There will be opportunities for staff to use existing skills, hobbies and passions to enhance the schools personal development programme. (e.g. gardening/outdoor learning/climbing/the Arts etc)

Experience & Skills:

  • Experience working with children, especially those with SEMH, autism, ADHD, or other special educational needs.
  • A strong understanding of behaviour management strategies and experience implementing them effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills to work with students, staff, and parents, promoting a cohesive learning environment.
  • Patience, resilience, and the ability to stay calm under pressure.
  • A genuine commitment to helping students achieve their potential through dedicated support.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and child protection policies is essential.
  • A commitment to personal professional development is essential.
